Why Take This Course
English is the official language of South Sudan. However, a significant portion of the population, including university graduates, struggle with English. This is a legacy of the education system which, under Sudan, focused on Arabic as the national and official language, and considered English as a second language, but never gave it the attention it deserved in the school curricula, bookshops, business, and media.
Legal professionals in particular, need to use up-to-date and accurate legal English in order to perform well in their work. This is because legal professionals:
- Are increasingly likely to deal with English-speaking clients and lawyers
- Are frequently expected to interpret or review long commercial contracts drafted in English
- May receive letters and emails written in English on a daily basis
Legal English differs from general English in many important ways:
- Lawyers using legal English often use a different structure to construct sentences.
- Most of the words used by lawyers are centuries old and no longer used in general English.
- A lawyer is constantly learning new propositions.
- When reading a commercial contract or a legal letter, a lawyer is likely to find on every page a new, technical vocabulary to understand.
- The material used in this course is well researched and based on the works authored by very experienced international legal English language educators, practicing lawyers, and translators.
Course Duration
The course is made up of 10 units, to be delivered over a 10-week period of 2 training sessions per week, each session taking 3 hours (6 hours per week).

Course Content
The course is composed of two levels: Foundation and Advanced levels. Beginners start with the Foundation and progress to Advanced. The topics covered in both levels are similar but differ in the level of difficulty and comprehension. Each course offer 10 units as follows:
- Unit 1 The Legal Profession
- Unit 2 The Language of Banking
- Unit 3 The Language of Contracts 1
- Unit 4 The Language of Employment Law
- Unit 5 The Language of the Law of Tort
- Unit 6 Understanding Contracts 1
- Unit 7 The Language of Business Law
- Unit 8 Modern Letter Writing
- Unit 9 The Language of Company Law
- Unit 10 Understanding Contracts 2
Course Outcome
After completing all 10 units in both Foundation and Advanced Professional Legal course, the trainees will have improved:
- Understanding and writing documents of legal English
- Prospects for earning a higher academic degree if they are studying for a law degree
